Fulcrum brings gas to Chivas Brothers’ distillery ahead of schedule

Fulcrum, the UK’s leading independent multi-utility infrastructure and services provider, has continued its successful track record supporting the Scotch whisky industry with the completion of a new gas connection to one of Chivas Brothers Speyside distilleries.

The 7.7-kilometre pipeline brings a continual, year-round gas supply to the Chivas Brothers Allt-a-Bhainne distillery and, despite a sophisticated installation programme, has been completed a month ahead of schedule.

Fulcrum’s engineers overcame the challenges of passing the pipeline through multiple terrains, including under bridges, within highway verges and along waterways on the route between the gas network connection in Dufftown and the distillery on the slopes of Ben Rinnes.

The new pipeline is part of the distillery’s strategy to adopt a reduced carbon energy supply. It will replace the need to rely on fuel oil delivered by large road tankers and further reduce its carbon footprint.

It follows the installation of a 13-kilometre pipeline to link Scotland’s main gas network to Chivas Brothers’ Dalmunach distillery, as well as the Tamdhu, Cardhu and Knockando distilleries in Speyside in 2016, which was also completed a month ahead of schedule. Previously, in 2014, Fulcrum also delivered a 16-mile pipeline connecting four other distilleries.

Martin Harrison, Chief Executive of Fulcrum, said: “The successful completion of the gas pipeline ahead of schedule is testament to the ingenuity and expertise of our team in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects.  It also builds on the experience we have developed working with the Scotch whisky industry to support its ambitions to embrace more sustainable operations through the use of gas.”

Gordon Buist, Director of Production at Chivas Brothers, added: “This project marks another milestone in our commitment to using less carbon intensive energy sources and reducing our carbon footprint. We continually strive for excellence on this front, and are therefore delighted to see this latest project delivered ahead of schedule.”
