The Project
Clyde Union Limited required Fulcrum to provide a strategy to
install a new gas supply, gas meter and outlet pipework to their
site in Glasgow.
About The Site
Clyde Pumps' largest manufacturing facility is located in
Glasgow, Scotland. It has been the city's largest employer since
1871.
Our Approach
Clyde Pumps Ltd produce high value equipment that is shipped
around the globe so it was essential that our planned works did not
interfere with production. Key to success therefore were the
pre-construction meetings that defined milestone targets for the
works around their ongoing site production.
Communication with Glasgow City Council Roads Authority was also
key as the majority of the pipe route was on an arterial route
leading into the city centre.
We delivered the work with no interference to the customer's
production and with minimal impact to the residents and commercial
premises close by. Fulcrum received praise from the customer and
local community on completion for the speed of the works and the
care taken by our engineers to minimise disruption.
The Technical Part
Fulcrum installed and adopted over 500 metres of medium pressure
gas mains and gas service pipework, a medium pressure kiosk and
governor meter module. There were several significant
engineering challenges including road closures, long term traffic
management and obtaining Network Rail clearance for working
directly underneath their rail line and bridge work.
Additionally we installed 5 metres of outlet pipework from the
kiosk up to the building.
A Dedicated Delivery
Field Operations Manager, Steven McGill:
"The customer required elevated pressures to operate his
pressure testing burners which were required to expand their
on-site capabilities. Several utility companies had already
designed and quoted a supply from the existing low pressure SGN
main at the site, but these designs would have required the
customer to install and maintain boosters and compressors.
Instead, I proposed installing a new medium pressure main and
service to remove the need for the undesired boosters and
compressors.
Although the initial one off infrastructure investment was
higher, the ongoing equipment costs were permanently removed. This
suited the customer requirements and Fulcrum was commissioned to
complete the works."
What Our Customers Say
"When Clyde Union Pumps decided to install new gas fired steam
generators for testing our range of TWL pumps, we had to look for a
solution that was a bit "out of the box" for the gas supply due to
the pressure and volume required to fire the generators. Fulcrum
provided a solution that was both technically ideal and cost
effective. They also project managed a successful installation of
the gas pipeline and the metering housing that finished ahead of
schedule. Not only were we delighted to have an early completion
but our neighbours were also delighted not only with the minimum
amount of disruption but the workmanship of the finished roadway
after the pipeline was installed. This installation is an important
asset for the company going forward and working with a company as
professional as Fulcrum was essential to the successful and speedy
conclusion of the project."
