Edinburgh Castle
Client: Forth Electrical Services (FES) Ltd
Location: Castle Hill, Edinburgh
Completed: April 2010
Project Type
- Alteration to the position of the existing gas supply
- Gas meter relocation
- Gas network adoption
The Project
Fulcrum worked in collaboration with our customer Forth
Electrical Services Ltd, Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Historic
Scotland to establish the best solution for this highly prestigious
building.
Reflecting our vast experience, we were selected to remove the
existing gas service and design and install a gas infrastructure
capable of supplying the ongoing requirements of the castle.
About The Site
Still in use today, Edinburgh Castle dominates the city skyline
from its position on top of the volcanic castle rock.
Our Approach
Working closely with our customer, Forth Electrical Services
Ltd, we provided a complete end-to-end service that fully
considered the on site implications of the project for this
historic building.
There were a variety of complexities and challenges including
working with archaeologists who were investigating the discovery of
previously unknown walls and ancient artefacts below the
surface.
Despite this we ensured that the works were successfully
completed to the customer's requirements and within the planned
timescales.
The Technical Part
Fulcrum disconnected the existing ductile iron gas service and
relayed the supply with over 120 metres of new gas mains and
service pipe to the proposed new meter position in a kiosk at the
entrance to the tunnel.
The design of this gas network was prepared by Fulcrum and
adopted by Fulcrum Pipelines Limited.
A Dedicated Delivery
Design Engineer Andrew Collin:
"There were many challenges from a design perspective on this
project. Not least agreeing a route with all parties that fully met
the customer's requirements and ensured safety whilst minimising
any impact to the historic site.
Many design options were proposed and evaluated before our final
design solution was agreed. This involved on site meetings with
representatives from all parties.
To deliver this successfully, we drew on our technical knowledge
and experience of current regulations such as IGE/TD/3 for mains
laying and IGE/TD/4 for service laying to ensure design and
engineering compliance. We also considered the aesthetics of this
historic building by ensuring visible pipe work was kept to a
minimum."
